Ballot Questions

Both the Democratic Party of Georgia and the Dade County Democratic Committee will have ballot questions on the May primary ballot.

These questions are non-binding. State parties tend to ask questions to highlight issues they are for or against, and it’s fairly easy to tell which way they want a voter to answer when the question is read.

Our local party asks questions based upon ongoing or potential local issues, and there’s no “direction” we necessarily want the answers to go. We’re genuinely curious as to what the local community thinks. Once we get the results, a group associated with our committee will think about further steps we can take as a local party to put the issue into the public domain.

On the ballot itself, the questions will not be distinguished as “state” or “local” questions, they will simply be numbered, in this year’s case, 1 through 6. The first two questions will be from the state party, the last four from our local committee.

1. Should the State of Georgia raise the sales tax on everyday items like clothing, food and school supplies to pay for an income tax cut that would make millionaires and billionaires richer?

2. Is it ethical for political candidates who have used their public offices to enrich themselves and their families, or have had nearly a billion dollars of business dealings with the State of Georgia, to hold statewide office?

3. Shall the local governing authorities provide a dedicated portion of the existing property tax to the Trenton Dade Animal Center to ensure long-term operation?

4. Shall the Dade County Government provide a process through which county residents can apply for assistance in removing abandoned junk from their property?

5. Shall the Dade County Government provide a means through which the Dade County Sheriff’s Department can issue citations to vacation rental property owners for nuisance complaints?

6. Shall the Dade County Government limit the size of future, proposed data centers to 10,000 square feet or less to minimize the centers’ tendencies to cause water shortages and electrical rate hikes?
